What Time of Day Is Best for Outdoor Photos?
One of the questions I get asked most often when booking a session is, "What time should we schedule?" And honestly, it's one of the most important decisions you'll make for your shoot because lighting really impacts the final images. My go-to recommendation is always the same: first thing in the morning if you’re an early bird, or about an hour before sunset. These two windows offer the most flattering, workable light of the entire day, but they each bring something a little different to the table. Don’t worry if you aren’t sure, I will walk you through the best time for you and your family.
Morning Light: Soft and Cool
Shooting first thing in the morning gives your photos a cooler, crisper tone. The light is gentle and even, without the harsh shadows or squinty eyes that midday sun tends to bring. It's a great choice if you're going for a clean, fresh look. As a bonus, mornings tend to be quieter and cooler. Note that this window of time can be short, so it works well if you are certified, always-ten-minutes-early, morning people. School days often make this timing harder for families.
Sunset Light: Warm and Glowing
Shooting about an hour before sunset, often called golden hour, gives your photos a completely different feel. The light turns warm and golden, wrapping everything in a soft glow that's hard to recreate any other time of day. If you love that dreamy, sun-kissed look, this is the window you want. We’ll pick a time that works best for our location; shade opportunities like trees and walls vs. wide open beaches play into this timing.
Which One Should You Choose?
There's no wrong answer here, it really comes down to the mood and tone you're hoping to capture. Want something soft, cool, and clean? Go with morning. Want warm, golden, and glowing? Sunset is your window. Either way, avoiding the harsh light of midday will make a noticeable difference in how your photos turn out.
Not sure which fits your family best? I'm happy to help you decide when we book your session.
